As Radio Amateurs, the very reason for our existence is to provide communications in times of emergencies. Because of this, we are given sections of radio spectrum to perform our work. This spectrum is worth billions of dollars to commercial interests and they would love to obtain any of it. As practice for emergency communications we help with communications for public service events. We always need to reaffirm the need for our frequencies. These events provide us with an opportunity to refine our skills as proficient operators.

May was a busy month for amateur radio public service in Pittsburgh.

The first event was the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. Allegheny County ARES as well as many Skyview members helped provide communications and as usual the event was a great success. The Pittsburgh Race for the Cure is the largest such race in the country and helps to raise money for breast cancer research. Radio amateurs provided vital communications to help with the organization of the event and maintaining communications for the safety of the participants. Many thanks to all radio amateurs that helped out.

The second major event in May was the City of Pittsburgh Marathon. This 26 mile race by far requires more radio operators than any other public service event in Pittsburgh. To provide communications for the marathon requires approximately 150 radio amateurs. Hams are used to provide race officials with shadow communications, staff all of the aid stations and mile markers, as well as provide tracking for race drop outs, lost runners, medical transports and operate as net control. This is no small task and requires many months of planning and preparation. Hats off to all that helped make the City of Pittsburgh Marathon another great success in 2011.

Amateur radio and Skyview members also help provide communications for many other events in the area including the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, the Great Race, the Saint Patrick’s Day parade, the air show in Westmoreland County and much more.
