Welcome to the Skyview Radio Society Weather Group.
On April 16th 2007 Skyview was able to help host a SKYWARN class, a program of the National Weather Service. Allegheny Hyde Park Elementary School in Leechburg was the location and we had a good turnout of local Hams.

Rich Kane of the National Weather Service gave another really interesting class, giving many new Hams their first introduction into how storms develop and how to read the sky. Rich packs a lot of good information into a very short time.

Everyone went home with good info and the ability to help report accuate weather information information to the NWS to help save lives and property.
Thanks to all the area Amateur Radio operators that came out to the class on this rainy, cold night, and special thanks to Rich Kane and the folks at the Allegheny Hyde Park school district for working with us and providing this class for the SKYWARN program.
Go to the Pittsburgh National Weather Service for more information on SKYWARN.

Our club Skyview weather station is always up and running. Using a Peet Brother 2100 weather station, we track weather directly from our clubhouse. It is processed by a computer and transmitted out via radio APRS or, Automatic Position Reporting System. The transmitted data is received by an Internet gateway station and sent to findu.com. You can see our weather data, as well as many other APRS weather stations by following the links!

Our system is battery backed up and always on. Our Weather Group meetings are on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30pm. If you are interested in weather and Amateur Radio, feel free to stop by our clubhouse on any Tuesday evening. Directions and map are on our home page at the bottom.

On March 21 st 2006 Skyview Radio Society helped set up a National Weather Service SKYWARN class. This class was one of two SKYWARN classes that Skyview helped to set up. Our first class was at Deer Lakes High School in West Deer Township .

Rich Kane, Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the Pittsburgh NWS always puts on a great class as he teaches a whole lot of information in a short amount of time. Before Rich started the SKYWARN class, we did a talk about Amateur Radio and its role in the SKYWARN program and how we are always looking to gain more Ham operators, hoping to attract some of the young people at the class and to get them their license. We had a nice PowerPoint presentation showing how we Hammies have a great time in public service, working contests, experimenting, making kits and projects, and many other things. After the Amateur Radio talk, Sarah Bastone did a PowerPoint presentation about a local weather event that happened two years ago and showed pictures of a funnel type cloud that passed near by.

After these presentations, Rich continued and taught his class. There were around 30 people in attendance and all were interested in everything that was said. There were handouts for weather spotters and some rain gauges given away.
Rich took a break around two thirds of the way though his class. We hoped that we might talk to some folks that showed interest in Amateur Radio, no dice… Hey, we tried. The teacher at the school that helped set this class up was interested and we hope she might be able to get some kids interested. If you don't try, you will always fail.
Thanks go out to Rich Kane, Donna Howells and MJ O'Rourke for all the help setting this class up. Also, thanks to Phil, AB3AW – Bob, K3RMB – Dave, KB3NFQ and all the Hams that came to the class. Thanks to Sarah Bastone for her talk about local weather events. It went very well.
Our second SKYWARN class will be at Allegheny Hyde Park Elementary School in Leechburg on Wednesday, April 26 th at 6:30pmLast Update June 20, 2008
